Every September is Life Insurance Awareness Month — a yearly reminder to ask a question most of us avoid: if my income disappeared tomorrow, would the people I love be okay? For millions of American families, the honest answer is no. And not because they don't care. Because life got busy, coverage got put off, or the policy they do have quietly stopped being enough.
Here's where things actually stand. Only about 51% of Americans own life insurance today — down from 63% back in 2011. And when you count the people who have some coverage but nowhere near enough, roughly 102 million adults are uninsured or underinsured. That's not a small gap. That's a third of the country walking a tightrope with no net.
“Underinsured” Doesn't Mean Uncovered
This is the part that catches good, responsible people off guard. Being underinsured doesn't mean you have nothing. It means what you have wouldn't go far enough. The classic example: you signed up for your employer's group life insurance during open enrollment, checked the box, and moved on. That plan usually covers one to two times your salary. It feels like protection. But if you earn $60,000 and your family would need to replace your income for fifteen years, cover the mortgage, and keep the kids on track, that $60,000 to $120,000 runs out fast.
Underinsured is the family that thinks they're protected right up until the moment they find out they aren't.
The Gap Hits Some Harder Than Others
The coverage gap isn't spread evenly. Women are roughly 11 percentage points less likely to own life insurance than men — even though they're often the financial and caregiving backbone of the household. Middle-income families and communities that have historically been underserved by the industry carry an outsized share of the risk, too. If you've ever felt like life insurance was “for other people,” you're exactly who this month is talking to.
How to Tell If You're One of Them
You don't need a financial degree to gut-check this. Run through these quick questions:
- Is your only coverage the group policy through your job?
- Is your total coverage less than about 10 times your annual income?
- Has your life changed since you last looked — a new baby, a marriage, a mortgage, a business?
- Could your family cover the mortgage, the debt, and daily life for years, not just months, without your paycheck?
- If you have a stay-at-home spouse, is their role protected too?
If any of those gave you pause, it's worth a closer look. We wrote two guides that walk you straight through it: 5 Signs You Might Be Underinsured and How Much Life Insurance Do You Actually Need.
Why the Gap Keeps Growing
The number one reason families skip coverage isn't apathy — it's a misunderstanding about cost. Study after study finds that people overestimate the price of life insurance by a wide margin, sometimes assuming it's three times what it actually is. A healthy 35-year-old can often lock in substantial term coverage for less than most people spend on streaming and takeout in a month.
The second reason is simpler: life is loud. Between work, kids, and everything else, “get life insurance” slides down the list until something forces it back up. Life Insurance Awareness Month exists to move it back to the top — on your terms, before a crisis makes the decision for you.
The Real Cost of Waiting
Here's what our founders Agu and Reginald tell every family they sit with: the best time to get covered was yesterday, and the second best time is today. Premiums rise as you age, and a single new health diagnosis can make coverage harder or costlier to get — sometimes impossible. The families in the strongest position are almost always the ones who acted while they were young and healthy, when rates were low and every option was on the table.
Let This Month Be the Nudge
You don't have to figure this out alone, and you definitely don't have to buy anything today. You just have to take fifteen minutes to find out where you actually stand. That's the whole point of Life Insurance Awareness Month — awareness. Once you know your number, the decision gets a lot easier.
Agu and Reginald built ARCGF Insurance because they each lost their mothers and saw firsthand what happens when a family isn't prepared. Helping people close this exact gap is the reason they do this work.
